Welcome to the ISME Research Pre-Conference Seminar 2024
22-26 July 2024
Venue: University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä, Finland
Venue: University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä, Finland
The 36th ISME World Conference 2024 aims to foster global understanding and cooperation among the world’s music educators by strengthening ties and sharing ideas about different aspects and issues within music education to promote music education for people of all ages worldwide. The conference theme, “Advocacy for sustainability in music education,” highlights the importance of researching the many opportunities music education can offer for enhancing a sense of belonging, equity and inclusion, and ecological sustainability.
The Research Commission Seminar is the first and longest-standing ISME commission, and it aims to:
a) examine through research important issues facing music education worldwide;
b) develop, refine and demonstrate a range of research approaches, methods and techniques for critically examining issues in music education;
c) provide a forum for communication, critical analysis, and dissemination of research innovations in music education;
d) deepen and develop the research knowledge base for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers in music education; and
e) bring together early career and experienced researchers from a broad geographic representation to build research capacity and promote research expertise in all regions of the ISME membership.
The 30th Research Commission Seminar usually solicits spoken papers and poster presentations. Paper presentations will be fully residential, while poster presenters can participate in the seminar virtually or in person. The seminar facilitates an environment where all scholars can refine and improve their studies with many in-depth discussions about methodology, analyses, and implications. All papers are distributed before the seminar, so presenters and observers have time to review them. This allows for extensive discussions centred around the research questions, methodological approaches, data analyses and how the researchers reached their final conclusions, strengthening research in music education worldwide.
We acknowledge the tremendous support and commitment from our hosting institution, the University of Jyväskylä, and the local organizing committee, led by Dr. Suvi Saarikallio, Professor at the University of Jyväskylä.
