Welcome Message from Commission Chair
Established in 1976, the Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission (MISTEC) held its first pre-conference seminar in 1980. It has a long history of promoting the development of research and innovations in theory and practice in the fields of music teaching in schools and teacher education. The Commission serves to support, develop and maintain international collaboration, cultivated through coalitions and strategic alliances, exchange of pedagogical resources, innovative teaching approaches, and experiences among professionals and institutions from around the world. The aim of the MISTEC Pre-Conference seminar is to engage participants, presenters, and commissioners in enriching dialogues and hands-on experiences related to music teaching and learning as well as music teacher education by exploring the most up-to-date practices and research internationally.
The theme of 2024 Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission (MISTEC) Seminar is “Sustaining and Building Resilience in Music Education”. Workshop, paper and poster presentations have been selected through a rigorous peer-review process. At the Seminar, presenters from around the world will highlight ways to extend current theoretical and educational thinking, together with exchanging innovative practical approaches for music education and teacher education. The collaboration fostered through this intimate, dialogic seminar enables the shared development of educational policies and practices geared towards sustaining and building resilience in music education.
The Commission is looking forward to welcoming you from 22-26 July, 2024 in the beautiful city of Tallinn, Estonia!
Dr. Lily Chen-Hafteck

MISTEC: Events Schedule
Apart from the seminar attendance, participants will have access to various activities. Prior to the conference in the morning on Monday 22nd July, they can sign up for an optional guided walking tour of Tallinn, which will last for 2 hours, showcasing the contrast between the historic Old Town and the modern creative districts (additional cost of $25 per person). The conference will start with an Opening Reception at 11.30 am that morning.
There are concerts at the end of Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, 24th July, the conference will take place for a full day at the Arvo Pärt Center in Laulasmaa, providing an opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in Estonian nature with a brief walk through the forest and to the coast.
