PURPOSE

The purpose of the 34th ISME World Conference 2020 is to foster global understanding and cooperation among the world's music educators, by strengthening ties and sharing ideas about different aspects and issues within music education, in ways that promote music education for people of all ages throughout the world. Given the current global reality, the conference theme Visions of Equity and Diversity is a timely reminder of music’s power to unite our humanity while respecting our differences. The conference theme encourages opportunities for dialogue and international collaborations that are thought-provoking and innovative, and that place equity and diversity at the heart of music education scholarship and practices world-wide.

This Commission pre-conference seminar focuses on equity, diversity and inclusion with particular reference to special music education and music therapy. Its purpose is to advance practice, research and theory, as well as to promote interdisciplinary dialogue between practitioners and scholars in the wider field of music and health. While retaining the conference theme at its heart, the Commission pays particular attention to contemporary pedagogical practices and curricula for people with special needs; therapeutic interventions and applications of music within diverse settings within and beyond special education; sociocultural and interdisciplinary perspectives on music practices for promoting people’s health and well-being.

Symposia may include:
  • several presentations on a single topic
  • colloquia (discussion panel) that include a major presentation with one or more invited discussants
  • roundtable discussion on a single topic with a group of speakers who propose their points of view and, under the guide of the chair (convenor), discuss these with the audience

Each of the above types of Symposia will be chaired by a Symposium Convenor (chair) who will submit the main Abstract and individual Abstracts on behalf of the panel presenters. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT THE SAME PROPOSAL FOR A COMMISSION AND THE WORLD CONFERENCE.
